A year after starting this job, I finally achieved something I myself said was impossible. I made a ceramic coating/sealant for cars that can be applied via an automatic car wash. You may all thank me here in this thread, or when I receive awards and royalties for years to come.

Kinja'd!!!

Pic is not mine, we haven’t made the ad print for ours yet. But my boss’s truck has a very full finish due to being washed multiple times a day and his truck looked brand new. He literally couldn’t fathom how it happened. Best part is I only had 2 out of 3 components online. The third and final part would’ ve added even more gloss after the wash.

Oh, and for those squeamish about automatic washes, this means the wash protects your own car from.....well, the automatic wash. It’s not as hard as a professional ceramic application, but damn does it come close, especially for an automatic application.

Now, if you'll excuse me, it is BBQ and beer time.

Is it actually ceramic or is it an SiO2-based thing?

Congratulations on the achievement. The only question I have is this something that will trickle into a bunch of auto car washes or is it prohibitively expensive to a comparable car wash coating?

It is not literal ceramics. Too brittle. None of them are, but they share hardness similar to a ceramic piece. Mine has siloxanes in it in addition to silicones, synthetic waxes, and more. UV light (from the sun) cures it. It’s wild.

It will remain proprietary to the company that I design for. What washes it ends up in? Honestly we'll be testing in West Michigan and southern Florida for at least half a year.

...very full finish...

I think you mean “dull”. And that’s fantastic. So then, the finish gets applied to the glass as well. How does it affect the glass? Does it create a buildup over time? Does it help shed water like Rain-X?

Yes to rainx, but while repeated applications will repair the coating in there, I don't think it can build up too much. The full layer will resist the leveled and coupling agents so where the coating is intact, it won't bond and where it is failing, it will get patched. It also only lasts a week or two right now. Our car wash is a subscription car wash so most people wash two or three times a week.

This.

To this day the biggest cleaning contract I’ve received was from a government facility on the docks of Seattle that left their vehicles out 24/7, surrounded by miles of industrial plants. Made me glad I wasn't there every day breathing the air

You need to be in FREEDOMLAND to get it. And it won't be back online for a week or two. Then limited rollout in Michigan and Florida. Then Nebraska and California. Then Nationwide.

If you want to test some samples out in a really dirty and dusty place, like say, Arizona, on a vehicle that gets really dirty- maybe something like a Jeep with a really vibrant paint color,  yellow for instance, I might know a guy.

If you're in Michigan any time soon, I'll tell you which ones have it. Granted, if your car is exceptionally dirty, your best bet will be to do a cheap wash first and then get the expensive one with the ceramic.

Yeah. This coating is a bit softer than professional ceramic applications, but it will trap those particulates in itself and fall off the car rather than get embedded in clearcoat.

Nope. Not pressure activated in the least. It is applied via multiple fan sprayers. It is a multi stage product though so the last step on its own won't result in the proper coating. Trust me, R&D for this one was.....ugly.

This sounds pretty cool. I presume that this would be worked into a touchless wash lineup? I can’t imagine brushes could also be involved and not wreck it. What’s the timeline to market now that the R&D is done?

Hopefully your new product takes off, something like this would be a godsend for me. I live in apartment so I don’t have the space or resources to really properly wash m y car, and even then I rarely have time or patience to do it. I also work in an industrial environment so my car is constantly covered in very fine dust and grime. I rely heavily on automatic car washes but I limit my use because of clear coat damage and because they rarely get everything off/looking really good.

What city do you live in? It might take a few years but eventually it will be spread to certain washes. Long story short, my company sells two models of car wash - franchised and non. The non-franchise sites have the same equipment, but might not have the same chemicals or upgrades. So even if you don't live bear a Tommy's Express, it might get used at a wash nearby.

I live in Houston, TX.

Idk if the Tommy’s Express was a joke or random example , but there happens to be ONE in the area ...on the exact opposite side of  the city from where I live which is a 45 minute drive with no traffic. The common franchises here that I’m familiar with are Mister Car W ash, iShine, and Blue W ave.

Maybe. This might be something we sell to customers at the wash. It lasts a fraction of the time of a proper, high end ceramic coating, but it could be a great user-applied or traveling detailer product. It is very forgiving for things like wind, or minor particulates and flaws during application.

Honestly the "ceramic" coatings are way overrated for the amount of labor they take to put on. I tried Gtechniq's coating, and while it wasn't a waste of money, all of the temporary spray on coatings rival it in terms of protecting the paint, while being much easier to put on. I switch from CarPro Reload, P&S Bead Maker, and Gyeon WetCoat. They all look fantastic and are applied to a wet car, so it saves me time and effort.
